2 States – The Story Of My Marriage, is Chetan Bhaghat’s fourth book. The book talks about how Krish Malhotra, a Punjabi, meets Ananya Swaminathan, TamBram and how they fall in love, convince their parents and finally get married. Its a hilarious read, with all the typical elements of a Chetan Bhaghat novel. The lead male character is your typical introvert, preferring to talk to himself than with the outside world. The girl is the extrovert and out-going type, preferring to do all the talking. The story starts in IIM Ahmedabad and goes to Delhi, Chennai and Goa with lot of twists and turns at every place.
Somehow, reading Chetan’s books give you the feel of watching a movie. Whether that reflects the author’s choice of topics or style of writing is an open question. In this case, the way he portrays the falling in love of the lead characters is movie like. Further on in the book, he deals with issues plaguing the Indian society at large, not burning issues, but certainly germane. This probably strikes a chord with his audience.
The topics he has chosen so far are strikingly similar (with the exception of “One Night At The Call Center”) and we probably want to know how he deals with different, more serious genres.
Chetan Bhaghat has a style of writing that combines humour, satire and seriousness. And he writes as if he directly speaks to the reader. His choice of topics, his style of writing and the fast pace, all combine together to make his books an engrossing reading experience.
If I were asked to rate the book, I would probably oscillate between 3.5 to 4 and probably settle with 3.5.
The seizure of the Rajdhani express by tribals in West Bengal on Tuesday was certainly the news of the day. The move seen by many as more of a publicity stunt than violence, is a grim remainder to India that the fruits of a liberalized, modern India have not reached it masses.
The attack would not have been possible without the backing of Maoists and so should be seen as a Maoist attack rather than tribals holding up a train. The incident spread like wildfire, and still it took 7 hours to free the train. Logistical difficulties of commuting in rural India, or a slow reaction? Nobody knows.
The visibly shaken driver of the train narrated the story in complete horror. Hard to imagine what he might have gone through in those horrifying 7 hours.
So what should we read from the incident? Well for starts the people who caused the attack are not left-ists, but left-outs. The marginalized sector of the Indian populace is speaking out in the only language they know. Can you really blame them? Next, this issue brings to light the miserable way the issue of Naxals, Maoists and any other separatists movement, has been dealt with in India.
At some level I simply feel that the latter point should make some noise by itself. So I will stop.
Rahul Dravid is the pillar of Indian Cricket and he has proved it once again. His unbeaten 177 against Sri Lanka in the first test at Ahmedabad, is testimony to his moniker, The Wall. He rose to the occasion, only like how champions do, and produced a free flowing innings to push Sri Lanks against the wall. His innings was paced very briskly and included 26 hits to the fence and one beyond it. It came at a time when India had managed to dig themselves a hole early morning, on day 1.
Dravid was ably supported by Yuvaraj Singh and MS Dhoni, with the latter scoring his second ton in Tests. Yuvaraj was a picture of his usual free flowing self and neither the stage nor the situation seemed to daunt him. Not even when Muralitharan tested him repeatedly. It was Murali who eventually got him out, but not before the rescue act was in place.
The stage was set for Dhoni- a flat track, known opposition, a near crisis like situation and Dhoni thrives in such milieu. He prodcued a free flowing innings of 110, and was out shortly before close of play.
All the while, “The Wall” kept going steadily and never looked like getting out. The Lankan bowling was completely at his mercy. Dravid indicated that 500 would be possible to reach from this stage, which only means that yet another double hundred by the man is in store on Day 2.
