India have lost a wonderful chance to climb on to the top of the ICC ODI Rankings. Its was a case of so near and yet so far for Dhoni’s boys. Three games into the series and it looked as though India was all over Australia, who were struggling to put 11 fit men on the field. And yet, three games down the road, Australia have taken home the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

The downslide started for India, in Mohali, where they should have won comforatably. This iota of complacency was enough for the Aussies to rejuvenate themselves. And in Hyderabad, they dominated from the start, with only Sachin Tendulkar offering stiff resistance. By now, the Aussies knew it was a matter of one game and they had two at their disposal. Mitchel Johnson’s killer first over in Gauhati sealed the series. As a result of this loss India, have now slipped into third place, when they could have been at the top. It was a good chance that the Indian’s squandered.
