Indian Americans in the US could be a major game changer in Indo-US ties.

As the United States and India inch closer towards consolidating common ground, Indians who settled in the US decades ago could help fasten the process. The recent visit by the Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, was a major event in the US media. Though the visit was not path breaking in terms of strengthening bilateral ties, the media glare surrounding it, certainly made calls for it.

The US and India are natural allies today. The Cold War era is over and India is gradually aligning itself with the US. India voted against Iran at the UN, in the debate on a nuclear Iran. The Americans also have vested interests in the Indian subcontinent. Testimony to this is the attention on the Af-Pak policy, Sino-US ties, the Nuclear Deal with India, et al, making the front page news over the past few months.

A lot of skilled Indians migratted to the US in search of better opportunities from the 60’s. These NRIs (Non Resident Indians) slowly climbed up the ladder of excellence in their respective fields. Today Indian-American community is one of the largest communities to come from the outside.

Get a perspective of this. Their strength is almost 3 million, a further hundred thousand are in unversities across the US. Almost one-third of Silicon Valley Engineers are from India. Ramakrishnan, a scientist of Indian Origin, shared the Nobel Prize for Chemistry this year. What’s more, the biggest Wall Street scandal today involves three Indians – the New York prosecutor, the accused and the chief witness. This could well be a scandal in Dalal Street, not Wall Street.

So what does all of this mean for Indo-US ties.Well, its only going to get better and already there are cat-calls for the same. Time for the pro-Pak approach of the Democrats to change. India is the United States biggest ally in the region.

Barack Obama’s winning of the Nobel Prize came as a huge surprise to the world. That the Nobel Committee is biased is a well known fact. After all, Gandhi was nominated several times but never won and worse, Hitler was also nominated several times. But it somehow maintains its credibility, perhaps for lack of competition.
Recommendations for the Peace Prize should be made some 6-8 months in advance. Back then President Obama couldn’t have even figured his way around the White House, let alone walking the narrow roads of International diplomacy. This raises the all important question, what did Mr. Obama achieve in 3 months of presidency that made him a contender. Perhaps the prize was given to him to stop him from becoming like his predecessor.
What’s worse, it will be another 50 years to know the name of the person who nominated Mr. Obama.
The Nobel Committee sure works in a weird way.
So, its been one year since, President Obama entered the White House. Has there been any tangible change seen in America or around the world?

Barack Obama promised so much in election campaign that one year after crossing the line, he has been found wanting for more. His approval ratings have dropped, marginally only though. The pillars of his election manifesto promised so much that sceptics questioned its practicality during his campaign days. But the world was too busy deifying Obama, that these voices were dismissed as naysayers. His promise of shutting down Gauntanamo Bay is proving to be hard to implement, however hard the President tries. His plans of winding up operations in Iraq are simply not feasible at this point. Healthcare is a major thorn in his domestic turf, though die-hard sceptics like Paul Krugman are giving it a mild thumbs up.
The last point may be the only reason why people are still not writing off Obama, but certainly his honeymoon period is over.
Ah, what about his international diplomacy, after all, that got the world outside America excited. Well, his Nobel Prize, or rather the reactions to it say it all. You may not be his fan, but Obama is hard to ignore. But how long will this last?
