The seizure of the Rajdhani express by tribals in West Bengal on Tuesday was certainly the news of the day. The move seen by many as more of a publicity stunt than violence, is a grim remainder to India that the fruits of a liberalized, modern India have not reached it masses.

The attack would not have been possible without the backing of Maoists and so should be seen as a Maoist attack rather than tribals holding up a train. The incident spread like wildfire, and still it took 7 hours to free the train. Logistical difficulties of commuting in rural India, or a slow reaction? Nobody knows.
The visibly shaken driver of the train narrated the story in complete horror. Hard to imagine what he might have gone through in those horrifying 7 hours.
So what should we read from the incident? Well for starts the people who caused the attack are not left-ists, but left-outs. The marginalized sector of the Indian populace is speaking out in the only language they know. Can you really blame them? Next, this issue brings to light the miserable way the issue of Naxals, Maoists and any other separatists movement, has been dealt with in India.
At some level I simply feel that the latter point should make some noise by itself. So I will stop.
So, its been one year since, President Obama entered the White House. Has there been any tangible change seen in America or around the world?

Barack Obama promised so much in election campaign that one year after crossing the line, he has been found wanting for more. His approval ratings have dropped, marginally only though. The pillars of his election manifesto promised so much that sceptics questioned its practicality during his campaign days. But the world was too busy deifying Obama, that these voices were dismissed as naysayers. His promise of shutting down Gauntanamo Bay is proving to be hard to implement, however hard the President tries. His plans of winding up operations in Iraq are simply not feasible at this point. Healthcare is a major thorn in his domestic turf, though die-hard sceptics like Paul Krugman are giving it a mild thumbs up.
The last point may be the only reason why people are still not writing off Obama, but certainly his honeymoon period is over.
Ah, what about his international diplomacy, after all, that got the world outside America excited. Well, his Nobel Prize, or rather the reactions to it say it all. You may not be his fan, but Obama is hard to ignore. But how long will this last?

The NREG Act brought the Congress back to power. It was a well structured program which reached out to the rural people. At the core of the NREGA was the guarantee of minimum days of labour it gave to the downtrodden.

The “Man” Behind it.

The man behind it was most certainly the Prime Minister. Fuelled by his urge to make realistic change and bound by the compulsions of coalition politics, Dr. Manmohan Singh walked a tight rope. Fear of loosing Left support, Manmohan Singh couldn’t do much in terms of Liberalization or Labour Reforms. NREGA was not a new scheme that was born from a radical thought. It was typical of all past preceeding reform schemes in content (at least mostly) but it was radically different in its implementation.

Social Audits.

At the core of the NREGA were social audits. These were to be conducted mostly by NGO’s or the general public at large. This move bought in transparency. And successful audits gave it credibility as well.

With a free mandate now, lets wait and see what Dr. Manmohan Singh can do now.

India and Pakistan’s bone of contention is certainly Kashmir and the issue of who has moral claim over the territory. A historical perspective is needed in attempting to put facts on the table.
History of the disputed land:

(Map not accurate. Shows the disputed regions and not international boundaries.)
At the time of Independence, India and Pakistan were convincing the princely rulers of several states to join the newly formed union. Most of the rulers in what is India today accepted to join the Indian union. It was the Nawab of Hyderabad and the King of Kashmir, who were undecided. The Nawab wanted to join Pakistan but the Home Minister then, Sardar Patel, played hard with the Nawab and convinced the Nawab forcefully.
The King of Kashmir had not decided which side to join, and mostly preferred Kashmir to be an autonomous region. But Pakistan exerted is control over Kashmir, mostly due to regional proximity and ethnic background, and this triggered India to respond leaving Kashmir and its will in the lurch. There began the problem. Nehru, being the kind of person who plays very straight, sought UN intervention in the dispute. This was much to the disappointment of Patel, who thought of employing the same tactics that yielded results in Hyderabad.
That’s the long and short of this seemingly unending dispute.
