Still Going Strong

The all time memorable sitcom Friends keeps haunting America. Ever since the final season of Friends ended, two generations of teens have passed. Still, the coming generations of teens adore Friends. This is simply amazing life for a serial with nothing more than great comedy to boast of. The way the characters were knitted is simply amazing. Every group of friends around the world has a Ross or a Phoebe. Every group has two friends like Monica and Chandler, who meet in the most un-romantic way and end up as husband and wife.

The reason I am reminded of friends is because of a conversation I had with my 17 year old cousin. He goes crazy when ever he talks about his favorite episode; the one where Monica and Chandler realize that they are infertile and look for a sperm and an egg donor. He laughs his heart out when Janice appears with her characteristic laugh. I wouldn’t blame him! Chandler’s reaction in that scene is simply superb. My cousin keeps wondering why the couple didn’t go in for embryo donation, wish I knew!

It’s amazing how Friends has managed to survive the test of time, so successfully. The actors have lived their characters on screen and have bonded well as friends out side of the show. Even now Courtney Cox (Monica) refers to Jennifer Aniston (Rachael) as her close friend. In a recent controversy over a photo-shoot, Jenifer spoke in support of Courtney Cox, even though she disapproved of what Courtney did. Clearly their friendship is not mere media speculation. It’s this bond that created all the magic. Whether or not Chandler and Monica went in for embryo adoption, it’s not the story that matters to us. It’s the way in which life of an average American is told, that matters.

Prison Break

It seems to be the season for TV shows, here comes my next one, Prison Break. This one is an amazingly shot show, making the impossible looking events seem realistic.
Prison Break, as the name suggests, is the story of how a man escapes prison, taking his brother out with him. Wenworth Miller has done a magnificent job as Micheal Schofield. Playing a subtle, yet powerful role is not many an actor’s cup of tea. And Wentworth Miller has pulled it off in style. It wouldn’t be too much of an exaggeration to say that his performance has taken the show to a new level.

This show seems to be shot more like a movie with a every episode ending with unexpected twists and leaving you wondering if this is the end. Yet, the next day its the beginning of a new plot. The next credit should go the writer Paul Scheuring, followed by Kevin Hooks who directed the show. Perhaps the trifecta of Wenworth Miller, Paul Scheuring and Kevin Hooks make the show what it is.
Seasons 1 and 2 were fine. But I got a feeling halfway through Season 3 that the writer was caught in his own web of imagination. And as a result, the show got a little dull.
All that aside, Prison Break is one of its kind. And stricltly not be missed.

How I Met Your Mother

how-i-met-your-mother-how-i-met-your-mother-1179535_1024_768My previous post was on Friends and this is one is on its clone, How I Met Your Mother. You can’t help but notice the similarities between the two. The characters, for instance, are sketched on identical lines. Barney Stinson is Joey re-incarnated and Robin Shabotsky is Rachael, only slightly different.

Despite being similar to Friends, How I Met Your Mother (HIMYM) was not a run-away success like the former. Perhaps it’s too early to judge but still, I will stick my neck out and say it, HIMYM is a good show but not great. It still has not become a cult thing like Friends.

Ted Mosby:

With a well etched character line, Josh Radnor scores well playing the role of the lead, Ted Mosby. The story line revolves around his life and to be fair on him, Josh Radnor does full justice. His boyish looks and a guy next door like demeanor complement his character well. A smart choice, I would say.

The other characters are also smart choices, especially Barney and Robin. They fit the part perfectly.

On the whole, is this what sitcoms are now? Well formulated story line, predictable characters. And sometimes even predictable moments in the show. Well, that’s for us to wait and see.
